The Week in SpaceJanuary 10-16, 2011
Satellite Roundup The space shuttle Endeavour is seen here poised for launch prior to the start of the STS-72 mission, which took place fifteen years ago this week. During their nine-day mission, Endeavour’s astronauts retrieved the Space Flyer Unit (SFU), a four-ton spacecraft that was launched by Japan ten months earlier. SFU carried numerous instruments, including an infrared telescope and power-generating equipment, and was controlled by the Kangoshima Space Center in Japan. The crew also deployed and retrieved the OAST Flyer, a test bed for technology experiments. Three of the STS-72 astronauts were involved in two space walks during which they tested tools destined for the International Space Station. On their second EVA they evaluated thermal improvements to the space suits. Image credit: NASA Weekly CalendarJanuary 10-16, 2011Holidays - Sky Events - Space History
