The Week in SpaceJune 13-19, 2011
Long Time No See In 1975, when it completed its third and final flyby of Mercury, Mariner 10 had the distinction of being the only spacecraft ever to explore the closest planet to the Sun. More than three decades would pass before another emissary from Earth encountered this cratered and sun-baked world. In early 2008, the MESSENGER spacecraft flew within 120 miles of Mercury, examining regions of the planet that had not been visible to Mariner 10. This spectacular color mosaic shows the eastern limb of Mercury as seen by MESSENGER on the departing leg of its 2008 flyby. The false colors in this image convey information about the distribution of different rock types on the planet’s surface. Two subsequent flybys put MESSENGER on a course to begin orbiting Mercury in March, 2011.
