The Week in SpaceJune 22-28, 2009
Dedicated Telescope The Gemini Observatory consists of twin eight-meter optical/infrared telescopes located on two of the best sites on Earth for observing the universe. The Gemini South telescope is situated on Cerro Pachon, 9,000 feet high in the Chilean Andes. Gemini North, seen here, is located on Hawaii’s Mauna Kea as part of the international community of observatories that have been built to take advantage of the superb atmospheric conditions on this long dormant volcano, which rises almost 14,000 feet into the dry, stable air of the Pacific. Together, these telescopes can access the entire sky. Gemini North, which was officially dedicated ten years ago this week, and Gemini South both employ adaptive optics to obtain images with unprecedented resolution (see week of 29 June).
